The 1991 season marked the introduction of the FIA's new and controversial 3.5 liter formula, which replaced the highly successful Group C category that had been used in the World Sportscar Championship since 1982. One of the leading Group C participants was the TWR Jaguar team, who had been crowned World Champion in 1987 and had taken Le Mans victories in 1988 and 1990. But neither of their existing bulky prototype designs provided a suitable starting point for the next generation Group C car. The new design team, led by Ross Brawn (of Formula One renown) focused on aerodynamic efficiency in every aspect of chassis desgin, to match their latest Cosworth F1 engine. A very short nose and a controversial two-tier rear wing resulted, for widest ground-effect tunnels.

After two seasons and six outright victories, the Jaguar XJR-14 was retired from active service. In its first season, the spectacular machine performed to expectation, winning Jaguar and driver Teo Fabi the World Team and Driver Championships.

To meet the FIA's new and controversial 3.5 liter formula introduced in 1991, which replaced the highly successful Group C category, Mercedes-Benz came up with an all-new car — the C291 — designed by its racing partner Sauber, and an all-new purpose-built racing engine, its M-291 3.5L flat-12 unit, was the result.

In the final race of the year, at Autopolis, the C291 scored its only win. Sauber Mercedes finished the season third in the teams championship.
